Endurance: A Vision of Resilience
in a Precarious World

In partnership with Art on the Underground, "Endurance: A Vision of Resilience in a Precarious World," a four-week course developed and devised by Amrita Dhallu who will delve into resilience in our fast-changing world and its intricate connection with challenging political landscapes. At its core, this course is inspired by the artistic expressions of Shanti Panchal, highlighting the themes of interdependency and exile that underpin his work.

A short film about 'Endurance', a new large-scale public commission at Brixton Underground station by Shanti Panchal –

In 2022, Shanti Panchal was commissioned by Art on the Underground to create a remarkable large-scale public mural," The mural title ‘Endurance’ is a reproduction of an expansive watercolor artwork that captures a community portrait, symbolizing our enduring resilience and interdependence. Within the artwork, you'll find three distinct scenes featuring Londoners from various walks of life, including an artist, an NHS worker, a waiter, individuals at work, and those at leisure. The background showcases iconic elements of the Brixton neighborhood and the broader London context, featuring landmarks like the Black Cultural Archives, Brixton Windmill, and Tate Modern. Additionally, the artwork incorporates the African and Caribbean War Memorial and the Cherry Groce Memorial Pavilion in Windrush Square, commemorating significant places and individuals that we celebrate, have lost, or have been taken from us, all while serving as spaces for gathering and renewal.

This course is taught by Amrita Dhallu, a curator and researcher based in London. She supports emerging British artists through commissioning, editorial projects, creating artistic networks, and intergenerational learning spaces. Her current research examines ‘care’, spatial politics, and ethno-futurist discourse within exhibition-making. She is Assistant Curator, International Art at Tate Modern, London, where she co-curated Lubaina Himid’s monographic exhibition (2021-2) and worked on projects such as Rasheed Araeen’s Zero to Infinity (2023) and Hilma af Klint and Piet Mondrian: Forms of Life (2023).

We look forward to taking you on this enlightening journey as we explore the rich tapestry of resilience and heritage.
